Pamela Joy Tamblin (1926-2015)
Air Commodore Pamela Joy Tamblin, was a senior officer of the Women’s Royal Air Force. She served as Director of the WRAF from 1976-80.
During World War Two, Joy had joined the Army in 1943 and served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service but later transferred to the RAF. She worked at Bletchley Park between 1943 and 1945.
Her two Sergeants at the time were Enoch Powell and Roy Jenkins..
She joined the Women’s Royal Air Force in 1951 and served in the Education Branch from 1951–55, and the Administrative Branch from 1955-76.
She was station commander of RAF Spitalgate from 1971-74.
She served as Director of the Women’s Royal Air Force from 1976-80.
In the 1980 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Tamblin was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).
Joy Tamblin died in Cornwall, aged 89, having been predeceased by her husband, Douglas.
