Supermarket eggs may carry health risk

October 30, 2020 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Shoppers at Aldi, Asda and Sainsbury’s are being urged to check their eggs after some were discovered to potentially carry a big health risk.

Customers who have purchased a certain batch of British Lion eggs are being urged to return them as it is thought they could carry a salmonella risk.

The affected eggs can be identified by the batch code and the best before date stamped on the eggshell.

They have been sold in stores across England and Wales and have the batch number 1UK15270.

There is a chance a small amount of eggs may also be contaminated due to salmonella being found in the environment, according to the Food Standards Agency.

The eggshell surface might also be contaminated.

Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

The batches affected can be found below:

As a precaution, consumers are advised to thoroughly cook the eggs listed above.

This means the egg yolks and whites should not be eaten runny. This will eliminate salmonella and avoid risk of illness.

Consumers who wish to return the potentially affected eggs should contact the store from where they bought them for further information.

If you think you are displaying symptoms caused by salmonella should contact their GP.
