On Friday 28 June, Lincolnshire Police launched their summer road safety campaign.
To protect our communities is the overarching aim. They want to reduce the number of people who are killed and seriously injured on our roads by focusing on the ‘fatal five’ offences; drink and drug driving, mobile phone use, speeding, carelessness and failing to wear a seatbelt.
This summer focus on the #Fatal5 runs alongside the national campaign launching on Monday, Operation Spotlight, which represents a united objective across the country to tackle the causes of collisions.
Insp Jason Baxter said, “The timing is really significant. Nationally, July sees the highest number of people killed or seriously injured on the UK road network and that’s reflected here in Lincolnshire where our numbers peak in both July and August. We are joining in this nationwide effort to make the roads safer and will be focusing on fatal five offences over the summer months.”
“We all have a part to play in making our roads safer, choosing to make good decisions and encouraging our friends and family to do the same.”
Enforcement and education are key in reducing collisions and here in Lincolnshire we are part of the Road Safety Partnership (LRSP), where we work with other agencies to improve the safety of our roads. Simon Outen-Coe, Communications Manager for the Partnership said, “In 2023, 48 people were killed and 378 seriously injured on the roads of Lincolnshire. The #Fatal5 offences are often a contributory factor in those collisions and the LRSP, through its initiatives, remain determined to make our roads safer through: education; training; preventative activities; engineering interventions; and supporting Lincolnshire Police in its enforcement activities.
“Those figures reflect an enormous amount of distress affecting a huge number of individuals within our communities and we should all play our part in ensuring that we use the roads safely.”
Through the campaign we will be highlighting what the #Fatal5 offences are, but also spelling out the penalties if you are caught and the potential consequences of causing a serious or fatal collision.
Operation Snap: report a driving offence
See it. Snap it. Send it! Operation Snap is an online portal where you can upload footage of possible #Fatal5 behaviors, or any suspected driving offences. Every single submission is viewed and where the footage shows a traffic offence, action is taken.
