A Canteen-café in a stately home car park has been awarded only one point for its Food Hygiene Rating.
Vale View Cafe, at Belvoir Castle, only opened in January, replacing the highly popular Café Allez which failed to get its three-year lease renewed in January.
But the new in-house café failed to impress inspectors from Melton Borough Council.
Although the report said the cleanliness and facilities were good, it called for improvement on hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, reheating cooling and storage.
And it called for major improvement in checks that food sold or served were safe to eat, and evidence that staff know about food safety .
A spokesman for Belvoir Castle said: “At Vale View Cafe, we take food hygiene and the safety of our customers very seriously and have taken immediate steps to address the points identified in the latest inspection.
“This includes maintaining correct paperwork, keeping doors closed and ensuring prompt bin collection.
“By making these changes and delivering further training for current staff and new starters to ensure standards are maintained, we are confident of achieving a high rating in our next inspection.”
