Work begins on Monday to remove the scaffold on St Wulfram’s, slowly unveiling the newly restored spire.
This work will take about 10 weeks to complete!
After more than a year, work is now complete.
Historic England (formerly English Heritage) is delighted with the quality of work that has been done, and have praised Ceder Steeple Jacks for the outstanding work which has been completed.
Not only have they rebuilt the top 40ft, but they have also straightened up the crocket lines (knobbly bits) going up the edge of each of the eight faces improving the work which was created in the 1300’s!
Rector, Fr Stuart Cradduck said: “Historic England also praised the St Wulfram’s for the initiative to ‘graffiti’ the inside of the spire by the hundreds of people who signed a stone, a first for a spire as beautiful and as important as St Wulfram’s.”
Once the work is complete, it is expected the peregrine falcons will make a welcome return to the olliers, at the top of the tower where they had been nesting for several years.
Fr Stuart said: “They are flying about, and are very curious about everyone who is working up there.”
They are also often seen to the south-west of the town, enjoying a meal of feral pigeon.
