A fun charity potato-growing challenge is back for 2026, sponsored by Downtown, and organisers are urging anyone interested to sign up before entries close this weekend.
The Spud in a Pot Challenge is the brainchild of Cllr Ian Selby, who is asking green-fingered participants to buy a seed for £5, plant it in a pot of soil or compost, and grow the heaviest crop they can. With only around 100 seeds available on a first come, first served basis, and one seed per entrant, spaces are limited.
A weigh-in will take place in July, with the date and venue still to be confirmed. The winner will receive a trophy, with runners-up prizes also on offer.
To get involved before the weekend deadline, contact Ian Selby via Facebook Messenger or email ianselby63@icloud.com for your seed and a copy of the rules.
