Sir William Robertson Academy, based in Welbourn near Lincoln, has just completed an energy saving project to help them reduce their environmental impact. The £40,000 Investment went towards changing 521 lights to new energy efficient LED lighting.
The project was supported with 50% grant funding from Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire, a programme being led by North East Lincolnshire Council to help public buildings and businesses reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions.
This simple change will allow the Academy to make a financial saving of up to £10,000 a year. Not only will they save money on the running costs of the building, but reduce their environmental impact too, by saving around 29 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Additionally, the new LED lights will last much longer than the old ones, saving maintenance staff time.
Dr Vicky Dunn, Energy Manager for Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire, said:
“It was a pleasure to help the school through the process of getting the grant and upgrading their lighting. The ERDF funding via Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire made it possible for them to do this project, which they had hoped to do for some time.”
Changing to LED lights was an easy decision, due to the payback period being less than 4 years and the large financial savings they will make.
Mrs Sancha Maggs,Trust Business Manager & Chief Financial Officer for Sir William Academy, said that:
“We received a tremendous amount of support from Vicky Dunn & colleagues at Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire, in bringing this project to fruition. The results have quite literally transformed the learning environment around school. Classrooms are lighter and brighter as a result of the modern, energy efficient LED units; and the intelligent lighting controls in corridors and other common areas, enable the school to only use energy when needed. This is a win-win, as it means saving on energy costs and a reduction in our carbon footprint”
The Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire programme is a £9.2 million programme which is being led by North East Lincolnshire Council on behalf of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP. £5.2 million has been funded by the European Regional Development fund.
