SKDC joins Great Big Green Week with free events across the district

South Kesteven District Council will take part in this year’s Great Big Green Week in June, supporting the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Between the 6th to 14th June, the council will host free events and online webinars to help residents learn more about sustainability, recycling, food waste and active travel.

Residents can meet with local organisations, speak to the council’s waste and sustainability teams as well as take part in family-friendly activities.

The first event takes place on Saturday 6th June at the Grantham Canal Society Depot in Woolsthorpe by Belvoir from 10am to 3pm.

The day will focus on getting outdoors, connecting with nature and learning about local walking and cycling opportunities.

Partners attending the event include the Grantham Canal Partnership, Lincolnshire County Council and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.

Free 30-minute canal boat rides down the Grantham Canal will be running every 45 minutes from 10am.

Visitors can also enjoy a cycle route along the canal from the Harlaxton Road interchange through to the Grantham Canal Society.

A free guided walk around Grantham’s Wyndham Park will explore the park’s wildlife, green spaces and the benefits of spending time outdoors. The walk will set off from the Wyndham Park Visitor Centre at 1.30pm on Tuesday 9th June.

The council will also be at Stamford Market on Friday 12th June to answer questions about food waste and recycling.

Free bicycle marking will be available at Grantham Canal and Stamford Market events to help encourage residents to cycle more often by protecting their bikes from theft.

As well as in-person events, a series of online webinars will also take place throughout the week. To register to attend the webinars, visit: www.southkesteven.gov.uk/climatenews/great-big-green-week-2026

  • Food waste and anaerobic digestion – Monday 8th June – 12pm to 1pm
  • Energy efficiency at home – Tuesday 9th June – 12pm to 1pm
  • Community orchards and nature – Thursday 11th June – 7pm to 7.40pm

Serena Brown, Sustainability and Climate Change Manager at SKDC, said: “The Great Big Green Week is a chance to celebrate the great work already happening across our communities.

“Small changes can make a big difference, whether that’s reducing waste, travelling differently or spending more time in nature.

“By joining this national campaign, we can show our support for protecting nature and tackling climate change. We’d encourage residents to come along, find out more and see what’s happening locally.”
