Stanley Shaw, (1887 -1915)

Together with two brothers, Alan  and Arthur, were among the first to volunteer their services on the outbreak of hostilities in the First World War.

He was an old boy of Grantham King’s School. He was a  motor cycling enthusiast, and keen member of the Grantham Golf Club.

He was the third son one of the principals of tanning firm of Messrs. A. and J. Shaw,  at the Earlesfield Works although Stanley worked as a draughtsman at Richard Hornsby & Sons.

Full of patriotism, they conceived their duty to render what aid was possible on behalf of their country. In the first instance they attempted to get into the transport section, but as this department was not requiring enlistments that time, they enrolled in the London Scottish Regiment and later the 1/4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, together with two of his brothers.

He had been offered a commission in the Royal Engineers, but turned it down to stay with his friends.

After only two months’ training the regiment was drafted to the front. This was in November.

He was killed in action the same day as his brother Alan died of his wounds, 9th May 1915.

He is buried in St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, France.
