Alan Louis Shaw (1884 -1915)
ALAN Shaw was the son of Alexander Shaw, owner of the tannery alongside the Grantham Canal, near the gasworks.
He went to King’s School and was a member of the Old Boys Society, before joining the family business.
He was a keen motorcyclist and an honoured member of the Grantham Golf Club, frequently figuring among the prize winners in competitions
He joined the Army in 1914 and became a lance-corporal. With his brothers Stanley and Arthur, he was one of the first to enlist voluntarily.
The following year he was shot through the spine by a sniper’s ricocheting bullet while serving in France.
He was taken to hospital where he died.
He is buried at Chocques, in northern France.
