When the £2 bus fare cap was introduced in January 2020, it became a crucial lifeline for people across the country who rely on buses to get to work, attend medical appointments and visit family.
This cap was introduced specifically to address the cost-of-living crisis, ensuring that bus travel remained affordable and accessible as households felt financial pressures intensify.
Despite the cost-of-living crisis being far from over, the government now plans to raise the fare cap to £3 from January 2025.A £1 increase may not seem like that much, but for daily commuters, it could mean up to an additional £520 per year.
This 50% fare increase will leave many people worse off and may isolate others entirely from essential services and community support.
As the Member of Parliament for Coventry South, I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of the £2 fare cap on my constituents.
I know it’s even more critical for those in rural areas, where public transport options are more limited. We can all see the catastrophic impact of the climate crisis around the world, and here in the UK.
So it’s more important than ever that we make public transport easier, cheaper and more accessible.
Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has already pledged to keep the £2 bus fare cap in his city, setting a strong example for the government in Westminster to follow.
So will you join me in calling on the government to keep the £2 bus fare cap in place through 2025?
