John Kelvin Round, (1949-2013)
BORN in Grantham, John Round attended Belton Lane Primary School and the Boys’ Central School.
He met his wife, Jean, at Grantham College and they married in 1975.
Mr Round worked in Leicester for a while and then at Kontak Manufacturing, Grantham. He then worked for his father in the family firm, WH Round and Sons, painting and decorating.
For a time he also had a stall on Grantham Market and attended markets in the area, before setting up his own painting and decorating business, KJ Round, which he ran for more than 16 years until ill health prevented him from carrying this on.
Mr Round had a keen interest in stamp collecting, which became his main hobby and helped in developing his interest in history.
He enjoyed both golf and rugby but his passion was cricket, which he played in his teens.
He helped with the Belvoir CC’s under-12 kwik cricket team and was delighted when they played during the interval at Trent Bridge on the last day of a Test match.
He followed his parents into the Scout movement for a while and was cub leader for the 7th Grantham group.
When the plight of young Anthony Nolan in need of a bone marrow transplant came to media attention, he immediately set about raising funds, firstly through donations and later with a group of friends, staging further events ranging from dances to sponsored bike rides and charity stalls.
Mr Round had the gift of being able to talk to anyone, anywhere about anything and he had a great knowledge of the Grantham area and people round about.
He will be remembered for his caring ways, sense of humour and the banter he shared with anyone he had a conversation with, especially his customers from running his own business and his time working as a market trader.
