Greener, healthier spaces across South Kesteven will be created thanks to a £12,000 cash injection to plant new trees.
The money is being given to South Kesteven District Council through the Trees Outside Woodland Fund, delivered in partnership between The Tree Council and DEFRA.
It will enable the Council to plant 58 trees and 238 metres of native mixed hedgerow across a variety of sites this winter.
This will contribute to increased tree cover and support environmental, social and community benefits.
As well as creating attractive and welcoming spaces, this funding will bring about increased biodiversity, improve local environments and provide valuable benefits for residents for years to come.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, Cllr Rhys Baker, said: “Lincolnshire has some of the lowest levels of tree cover in England. This money will allow us to bring more trees into our communities and create greener, healthier places for people and nature.
“The project is about more than simply planting trees. It is about creating a lasting legacy for our communities, improving local environments and giving residents the opportunity to enjoy the benefits that trees can bring.”
The trees will be planted in Council-managed open spaces, helping to increase climate resilience through the provision of shade and natural cooling, and supporting carbon sequestration in the longer term.
In 2024, SKDC implemented its Trees and Woodland Strategy which, in line with the Government’s Environmental Improvement Plan, aims to increase local tree canopy cover. The creation of new areas of tree cover will be guided by this.
A range of native and non-native species have been selected, to provide maximum social and biodiversity value. Some provide shelter and food for wildlife, while others bring shelter, shade, or food sources for native insects when local flora struggles to adapt to rapid warming or droughts.
