Restoration work begins at Bellmount Tower

September 7, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Restoration work has begun at Bellmount Tower, as part of the Reconnecting Grantham partnership with The Woodland Trust.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, restoration works will include repairing the roof, replacing windows and frames, and brickwork repairs.

For safety, the Tower will be cordoned off while these works take place, and Tower Open Days will be cancelled until the work is complete. All guided walks will still run, but unable to take you into the Tower during the works.

The work is due to be completed by the end of October, with the scaffolding taken down by mid-November.

A Lincolnshire tower overlooking a country house and its surrounding park was built 270 years ago to entertain guests and allow them to soak in the view.

The Grade II listed Belmount Tower, off Five Gates, Londonthorpe, was built in 1750

Although an exact architect is disputed, the tower was allowed to be built by John Brownlow (1690-1754) who was made Viscount Tyrconnel in 1718 who settled at Belton House in the early 1720s..

The tower has two purposes. The first is to terminate East Avenue on one side and also, it provided a vista from the tower to the house.

The tower was originally larger and had wings on either side that were later removed.
