This year, we sadly lost a true Grantham legend, ‘Big’ George Garrett, who touched the hearts of so many in our community.
Two memorial benches were installed in Grantham yesterday to honour one of the town’s best-known characters.
They are located in Abbey Gardens and inside the Morrisons restaurant, where there is already a plaque in his memory.
They were donated by two local businesses The Steel Yard Company (Morrisons) and Roll and Scroll (Abbey Gardens) provided two fantastic benches each with their own individual styles and twists, one with a robin on and one with a flat cap.made the bench in Morrison’s which was organized by Cllr Tim to donate.
The Abbey Garden bench organized by Evonne Yates from the Three Gables.
George’s niece, Gemma Garret said: “We as a family would like all those involved to get the right recognition as we are over the moon with them both. “
“We simply cannot thank all those involved enough, we were blown away with their generosity and the benches are breathtaking each providing something that our Uncle George Loved.
It’s such a lovely tribute for our Uncle George and one that we will always be grateful for.
George really was loved by so many.”
The benches were provided free of charge which means the money raised by you wonderful people can go to make a commemorative bust which will go into the Museum. A fitting tribute to a man so well known and loved in the town.
Only leaves one thing to be said ‘t’ain’t nowt do wi’ you’
A huge thank you to Councillor Tim Harrison for his hard work in arranging this fitting tribute. We’re also incredibly grateful to Morrisons for allowing the bench to be placed in their café, ensuring that George’s memory will live on in a place he loved.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to George’s family for accepting this donation. It’s a small gesture, but we hope it brings some comfort and helps keep George’s spirit alive in our community.
Rest in peace, George. You will always be remembered.
