This picture shows the entrance to the tunnel leading to Victoria station (where trains from Grantham used to go – they’d have approached down the viaduct seen curving in to the picture from the right, behind the signal box). The main tracks in the foreground of the picture were the Great Central main line to London Marylebone via Leicester and Rugby. Sadly, all this has gone… Trains from Grantham now take a different route into Nottingham and arrive at the old Midland station. Victoria – the grander and more centrally located of the stations – was demolished and replaced with the Victoria Centre. In this scene now you would see a modern viaduct for the trams and an arts centre blocking the view of the old tunnel. Sad!
