Refurbished public toilets in Grantham reopen

January 27, 2025 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Public toilets at Conduit Lane in Grantham have opened this week following extensive refurbishment by South Kesteven District Council.

The work included new fixtures and fittings, replacement windows and doors, full redecoration, and the installation of a separate accessible toilet to cater to visitors with additional needs.

The £190K project was funded through the £4.1m Grantham Future High Streets Fund awarded to the Council by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Cllr Richard Cleaver, Cabinet Member for Property and Public Engagement, said: “I am delighted to see the refurbished toilets at Conduit Lane reopen for public use after a number of years.

“The much improved facilities are a fantastic addition to the town centre and demonstrate the Council’s commitment to enhancing Grantham’s offer to visitors and residents.

“Alongside our other improvement projects, the toilets will help to provide vital facilities in the town –  increasing footfall, supporting our local businesses and creating a more welcoming environment.”

The toilets were officially opened earlier today (Monday 27th) in a ceremony attended by SKDC councillors and officers.

Darren King, Managing Director at Lindum Group, the contractor responsible for the work, said: “The Council is a repeat and valued customer of ours and we are happy to be handing over yet another successful construction project.

“Lindum is currently building new homes at Swinegate, a new depot at Turnpike and we are onsite at the Council Offices carrying out maintenance works.

“But this project shows that we can also deliver smaller projects compliantly and competitively for our public sector clients.”

The reopening of the toilets marks a milestone in the Council’s investment programme which saw improvements to the Market Place and Station Approach last year.

Raised road levels in the Market Place has created a multi-use social space to encourage footfall and diversify town centre businesses, market and leisure opportunities.

The first event hosted in the new space – the Festival of Community – saw crowds of people attend both daytime and evening entertainment, culminating in a lantern parade in October last year.

At Station Approach, resurfacing, upgraded pedestrian access, and improved traffic signals have enhanced safety and created a more welcoming route into the town for visitors arriving by train.

These projects build on previous initiatives to enhance shopfronts, improve the town’s appeal, and encourage affordable housing through upper-floor conversions.

The toilets will be 20p to use, payable via a contactless payment, and open every day from 9am until 4pm. The accessible toilet can be opened using a radar key.

Other facilities are available in Abbey Gardens and Wyndham Park Visitor Centre.
