A protest at plans to bulldoze up to 60,000 trees at Prince William of Gloucester Barracks, is to be staged on Sunday.

As part of the Great Big Green Week, South Lincolnshire Green Party is organising a demonstration They meet there at 11am.

The 73 hectare woodland planted for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee could be decimated if housing plans go ahead in their current form.

On the outskirts of Grantham, a young wood is earmarked for destruction to make way for thousands of new houses after the Army Baccks shuts in two years’ time.

The Prince William of Gloucester Barracks is currently overseen by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, part of the Ministry of Defence. The site was a place of celebration in 2012-13 when the armed forces, local community and the Woodland Trust staff came together to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a new native wood.

But now development plans could destroy the trees that took root less than a decade ago.

Homes England, has been tasked with designing plans for at least 3,500 new homes on the site.

The following Sunday (26th) they meet again at 11am, this time on St Peter’s Hill for a protest against the lack of action being taken by Government in the face of the climate emergency.

During the week, they will meet at Grantham House on Wednesday (22) for an evening of fun and fine wine, with organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines. 7 – 9pm, tiockets at £25 each are available through Eventbrite.

They also have a stall on Grantham Market on Saturday (25th) from 8am, where the public is invited to discuss how to tackle the climate crisis.
