Thomas Pratt (1847-1925)
THOMAS Pratt joined the Grantham Journal as an apprentice printer in November 1856 aged only nine years old and was paid just one shilling (5p) a week.
Five years later, as a journeyman, they had shot up to seven shillings (35p).
His indentures not only tied him to the company for five years, but stated “ He shall not commit fornication not contract matrimony within the terms. He shall not play at cards or dice or any other unlawful games.”
A native of Tuxford, he was also warned not to “haunt taverns or playhouses”.
On the plus side, the Journal had to provide him with instruction and “sufficient meat, drink, lodging and all other necessities.”
Aged 25, he married farmer’s daughter Priscilla Beavin and the couple moved to Redcross Street. One of his two sons, George, followed him to the Journal print room.
Thomas must have enjoyed his work because he died in service.
