Colourful poppy fall cascades are taking shape for Remembrance commemorations in
Grantham – with a boost from the military.
Lt Col Di Youngman and Sgt Mark Conway MBE from Prince William of Gloucester Barracks
joined volunteers and Grantham College art and design students at one of the museum
workshops.
They helped sew poppies for the two cascades to be installed either side of the Guildhall
entrance for Remembrance week and met art and design students creating new silhouettes
as part of the art installation.
The silhouettes – a WW2 paratrooper, a WW1 Tommy, a naval Wren and a land girl – are all
being personalised with stories of local people and places.
Lt Col Youngman, Head of Establishment Prince William of Gloucester Barracks and
Commanding Officer Army Training Regiment Grantham, said: “This is a beautiful project
and we were delighted to do our bit to contribute.
“Remembrance celebrations are very special to everyone in the military, as is the Army’s
place in the Grantham community, and the project brings both sides together perfectly.”
Grantham Arts is delivering the project for South Kesteven District Council, creating a new
backdrop for St Peter’s Hill Remembrance Garden and the Remembrance salute from the
Guildhall.
The installation will remain in place during Remembrance Week.
