The following plea was sent by SKDC Coun Charmaine Morgan to County Highways chief Coun Richard Davies….
I am receiving contacts from residents in Dudley Road, Grantham, who have become victims of a crime spree in their area.
The residents believe the lack of street lighting is a key factor. Most crimes are occurring in the early hours. Dark streets are encouraging the spate of car break ins and cycle thefts.
My residents sense of security is being undermined by the situation. I have called for a meeting with local police officers. However Street lights fall ino LCCs Highways remit.
A number of residents have also have queried why the lights appear to be going off an hour earlier than before too.
Please advise when our street lights will be switched back on and if we can highlight areas of particular concern.
Dudley Rd and Cecil Street are particularly dark at night. They are parallel to Harrowby Rd which is lit rather than at a right angle. I believe these lights need to remain on at night.
Dudley Rd and Cecil Street in particular are an important pedestrian route from the town centre toward Somerby Hill and used by shift workers, theatre, cinema pub goers at night – covid 19 permitting. They are also a route for drug takers/dealers to use from The Paddock and Wyndham Park to Harrowby Rd and streets off.
The area also has HMOs and drug dealing has been associated with some of these properties, especially on Harrowby Rd.
Please get these lights back on.
Best regards Charmaine
