Nick Pigott (b1951)
BORN near Retford in 1951 and moving to Grantham at the age of four, Nick Pigott was brought up in the town and attended Gonerby Hill Foot and Little Gonerby primary schools before going to the National School in Castlegate.
After a spell away, he returned to Lincolnshire in the late-1960s to become a newspaper reporter on the Sleaford Standard, Lincolnshire Chronicle and Nottingham Evening Post, during which time he wrote a weekly column and match report on Grantham Football Club.
His career then took him to Fleet Street, where he worked as a sub-editor on national newspapers for more than ten years.
In the late-1950s, Nick (who lived at that time in a house overlooking the East Coast Main Line at Peascliffe) had become very interested in railways and that passion ultimately led in 1994 to his appointment as Editor of the London-based Railway Magazine, Britain’s top-selling rail periodical.
Almost 20 years later, Nick is still editing the title, having become the second longest-serving editor in its 116-year history, and is once again based in Lincolnshire following the purchase of the title by Horncastle-based Mortons Media in 2010.
Nick has published several articles and a book on Grantham’s railways.
He is a member of Grantham Railway Society and, when not working with trains, continues to support the Gingerbreads whenever he can!
