Nicholas David Peacock (1968-1989)
Grantham-born Nick Peacock was a pupil at St Wulfram’s School.
He joined the Royal Anglian Regiment, holding the rank of private, but was killed less than a month into his duty in Northern Ireland with his regiment’s 2nd Battalion.
He was the first soldier to be killed in 1989 in an IRA ambush.
He died following an explosion from a kilo of explosives that were concealed in a drainpipe outside the Rock Bar, in the Falls area of West Belfast.
The bomb was detonated as 20-year-old Pte Peacock was standing beside it.
He had been taking part in a joint army and police foot patrol when the 11:50PM attack took place.
He suffered serious leg and lower body injuries and died a short time later in hospital.
There is a bench to his memory on St Peter’s Hill
