BRITISH Red Cross volunteer Pam Hansen is having her head shaved to raise for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her mum, Rita Hansen.
Rita died on Christmas day 1998 aged 62.
She was treated for ovarian cancer almost six years before her death, during which time she faced her cancer with courage and a sense of humour.
When she started chemotherapy the family bought hats in a show of consolidation if she lost her hair, which she didn’t.
Eight months before she died she was diagnosed with a secondary tumour on her brain, this was operated on and she regained her health.
Unfortunately late November she was diagnosed with another brain tumour, which was inoperable. In the last month of her life she tried to say goodbye to everyone she knew, I am so proud of how she coped with her “death sentance”.
Rita never got to see her grandaughters grow into beautiful, clever and caring women, she never got to know her great grandchildren who would have melted her heart as they do everyone who meets them.
Pam (53), who lives in the town, Dysart road in Grantham, spends a lot of her time volunteering for the British Red Cross and is a member of another charity, Leicester and Rutland 4 x 4 Response group.
She has previously raised money for St Barnabas Hospice, completing a 100km walk through the Sahara Desert and took part in a sponsored abseil down Baird’s Malting, Springfield Road.
She said: “If by shaving my head I can help make sure those with cancer and their families are supported through their illness then I will have done my Mum proud.
The head shave will be the Cirencester Tough Mudder event, where she is volunteering for Red Cross on 22nd August.
Pam said: “Please give what little or much you can to help fight cancer.”
So far, she is halfway to her £200 target.
