Visitors to Grantham are preparing for a year of markets, music and town centre events as we continue to encourage visitors into the town.
Steampunk enthusiasts, antiques collectors and fans of the Farmers’ Markets will all have dates to add to their diaries.
There will also be a Medieval Onion Fair in the autumn, revisiting Grantham’s historic tradition from days gone by.
Visitors once flocked to Grantham for the historic onion charter fair, when the relics of St Wulfram would be one of the attractions, exhibited to devout visitors of the parish church.
Nowadays, stalls will be set up to sell local produce, onion-themed goods and crafts. Food and drinks sellers will ply their trade featuring dishes made with onions. There will be music, street performers, and historical reenactments – as well as an onion eating contest and onion shows.
South Kesteven District Council’s traditional outdoor market offering is bolstered by Grantham’s regular craft market on the first Saturday of every month, and a Farmers’ Market on the second Saturday of every month.
Stamford holds its Farmers’ Market on the High Street every Friday alongside the regular street market on Broad and Ironmonger Streets.
Bourne Market, meanwhile, is on a Thursday is the home of a great fishmonger, greengrocer, and baker, all set up outside the library in Bourne, behind the Town Hall and easily accessible from the M&S car park.
SKDC Council Leader Cllr Ashley Baxter, who is also responsible for Economic Development, said: “We very much value our traditions in Lincolnshire and our outdoor markets here in South Kesteven remain one of the tops draws for visitors.
“This calendar of events is part of the action plan to put them on the map by giving people from within and outside the local area a reason to visit our towns, spend their time and money here and see all we have to offer.
“Free town centre wifi, our existing history and heritage plus specially-curated events are knitting together to improve footfall. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our rather special event days.”
