LABOUR councillors in Grantham have poured cold water on suggestions the town’s southern bypass be called Lady Thatcher Way.
Work on the multi-million-pound road is due to start in March in the the former Prime Minister’s hometown.
Conservative councillor Ray Wootten asked Lincolnshire County Council to consider names, including Lady Thatcher Way, but admits it is “controversial”.
SKDC Labour leader Charmaine Morgan said there were plenty of “other famous Grantham offspring” to choose from.
She suggested the road should instead be named Heroes Way because of the area’s links to the armed forces – the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks and RAF Spitalgate are along the new road’s route.
The reluctance to name a road after Lady Thatcher has spread to her former constinuency for 30 years, Finchley where residents refuse to name road after former Prime Minister.
But while councillors battle out for names, local people on social media are calling for former Grantham Town manager Terry Bly to be recognised.
One message to GM states: “Terry Bly put a smile on Grantham’s faces both as manager of the club for 13 years and as a sports shop owner. Maggie made no-one smile apart from the super-rich.
“It should be Terry Bly Way.”
Before joining Grantham, he scored a record-breaking 60 goals in a season with Notts County.

There is no other Contender. Lady Thatcher has made her name on the World Stage. No other “Grantham Offspring” could hold a light to her. Like her or not … she has put Grantham on the map. Now is the opportunity for Grantham to return the compliment. Shame on our hesitations …..
