This weekend (31 May – 2 June) is National Specials Weekend, marking the start of Volunteers Week. We will be taking the opportunity to celebrate the amazing work of our Special Constabulary and volunteers.
Amongst the array of roles they perform, ten Lincolnshire Specials make up the Safer Roads Team. They are tasked with keeping our roads safe by targeting what we refer to as the fatal four: speed, seatbelts, phones and drink / drug driving.
As part of our celebration of Specials weekend, police are sharing the impressive results that the team have achieved since their introduction to the County a year ago.
As the team is staffed entirely by Specials, the results below come solely from the efforts of people who have volunteered their time for free.
In numbers:
- 2 Special Sergeants
- 8 Special Constables
- Put in 444 shifts
- Gave 4300 hours of their time
- Dealt with 34 mobile phone offences
- Dealt with 80 seatbelt offences
- Dealt with 490 speed offences
- Dealt with 93 other offences (e.g. insurance, careless driving etc)
- Seized 45 vehicles
- Arrested 22 people for drink / drug driving
- Conducted 400+ negative breath tests
Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones voiced his support for Specials Weekend. He said, “Police volunteers deserve our boundless gratitude. They give their time for free, in order to help keep our County safe. That’s a commitment worthy of recognition.
“I wholeheartedly support Specials Weekend and Volunteers Week and welcome the opportunity to say thank you to those selfless and remarkable people.”
What are you doing this weekend? Join the campaign to say a special thank you!
Police are inviting people to share on social media what they are doing to enjoy their time during Special weekend while our Specials themselves are out policing, giving their time for free.
If you would like to join us, simply post a picture of you doing your thing, with text along the lines of, “What are you doing this weekend? While I am <e.g. at a concert / out with family / visiting the coast>, Lincs Police Specials are out giving their time for free.” Please use the hashtags #specialsweekend and #specialthankyou
National Specials Weekend kicks off Volunteers Week which commences 1 June.
In Lincolnshire has hundreds of volunteers who give up their time for the force, not only as Specials but in a variety of roles. Our young cadets learn about policing and get involved in local crime prevention initiatives, community clean-ups and charity fund raising activities. Our Volunteer PCSOs are out on patrol supporting their PCSO colleagues, helping to deal with local issues and our Police Support Volunteers help out in offices; open up smaller stations to the public; keep police cars clean and tidy and many other roles. Volunteers Week is a good chance for us to thank those who give back to their communities.
