One crucial question to ask your plumber

November 30, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

WaterSafe, the national register for approved plumbers, is urging residents to ask their plumbers one vital question:

Are you using lead-free solder?

Plumbers often use solder to join pipes; this should always be lead-free to prevent lead from dissolving into drinking water and causing health problems.

Pregnant women, babies and young children are most affected, and it can harm children’s development.

Despite the use of lead solder in drinking water systems being illegal, a WaterSafe survey revealed two-thirds of plumbers carry lead in their tool bags, and a number still use it on drinking water systems.

WaterSafe-approved plumbers who were surveyed were much more aware of the health risks and were far less likely to carry or use lead solder.

Julie Spinks, Director of WaterSafe, emphasises the importance of this issue: “Always using lead-free solder is the only safe option, which is why WaterSafe is calling for property owners and tenants to ensure only lead-free solder is used in their homes and buildings.

“There is no safe limit for lead, so asking your plumber about lead-free solder will help prevent lead from leaching into drinking water and protect everyone’s health.”

Lead solder is virtually indistinguishable from lead-free solder to the untrained eye, but lead solder usually comes in a red or yellow casing, while lead-free solder is fitted in green casing.

WaterSafe also advises DIY enthusiasts to only buy and use lead-free solder from a reputable source in a green reel, for any home pipework repairs. The sale of lead solder to non-professionals has been banned since 2018.

WaterSafe is supported by all UK water companies and drinking water regulators. Approved plumbers on its register are trained in water regulations designed to keep water safe, have suitable insurance, and are audited.
