On-site preparations start for next phase of Grantham Southern Relief Road

May 30, 2019 Leave a Comment

The council’s preferred contractor, Galliford Try, has started setting up on-site for the next phase of relief road construction.

The preliminary works, which started on Tuesday 28 May, are expected to last for eight to ten weeks.

Cllr Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said: “Over the next two months, people will start seeing a lot of movement next to the A1 as Galliford Try starts building the project’s site cabins.

“Galliford will also start sorting out logistics like health & safety plans, storage areas for materials, site staffing and other essential tasks so they can hit the ground running this summer.”

The second phase of the scheme, which will join the B1174 to the A1 trunk road via a grade-separated junction, is expected to take approximately 18 months to construct.

Construction of the third and final phase of the relief road, which will link the A52 at Somerby Hill to the new roundabout off the B1174, will begin shortly after the start of phase two and is expected to take approximately three years to build.

Cllr Davies added: “Things are really going to start ramping up now that all of the legal boxes essential to bringing a scheme of this size forward are ticked and we have the backing for Government.

“It’s taken awhile to get to this stage, but now it’s just a matter of getting spades in the ground and diggers on-site so we can start building towards more reliable journey times, reduced congestion and economic growth in and around Grantham.”

The Grantham Southern Relief Road project is being led by Lincolnshire County Council and supported by South Kesteven District Council, Greater Lincolnshire LEP, Highways England, Department for Transport, Network Rail, Homes England and local businesses.    For the latest news on the Grantham Southern Relief Road, visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/majorprojects
