The new Aldi store to be built on the corner of Trent Road and Harlaxton Road, has won the approval of SKDC’s planning committee
At the meeting today, the plans to use the former Grantham Road Services site, gained overwhelming vote of confidence.
Supermarket chain Aldi’s plan to move from its South Parade home since 1995 to much larger premises to the west of the town takes a step forward this month.
An Aldi spokesman said: “Aldi are investing significantly across the UK, modernising its existing estate and has identified this vacant land as an opportunity to upgrade its current offer in Grantham.
“The current Aldi at South Parade is very popular. However, there is no potential to expand the site and bring it in line with Aldi’s latest openings and it is therefore necessary to relocate.
“The proposed store will accommodate the full range of Aldi goods and enhance the customer experience through improved facilities, including customer toilets.
“Our current store is extremely popular but is no longer able to meet the needs of our customers. It is now dated and in need of modedrnisation and reconfiuration.”

With this considerable planned expansion of Aldi and the continuing success of Lidl, I hope that our UK-owned supermarkets in Grantham – Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s – will up their game so that they can compete. I have to say that the sheer efficiency of the German-owned stores is something to behold, not least in terms of staff productivity, and there are lessons to be learned as a matter of urgency by our UK supermarkets!
