There is so much going on in this picture, it seems strange it was inspired by people stopping work. The schoolboys in their caps (you could be caned for failing to wear one), a lad going fishing, a proud ex-serviceman with his badge and blazer.
Behind is the waiting room, which was locked out of hours. They had a long wait, as this was during a lightning strike in 1953.

Grantham bus station running from Welham Street to St Peter’s Hill; in 1953.
When it was time for the bus to leave, the driver and conductor would magically appear from the tiny staff canteen at the bus station. Sometimes it was like Dr Whos Tardis, the way so many came out of there. The picture was taken in 1953.

Travellers were far from happy when they discovered the bus drivers had gone out on strike.
Behind them is the public library.
