Leading Lincolnshire housing association shares top tips for buyers to unpack the stress of moving home

A leading Lincolnshire housing association is helping to unpack the stress of moving home with simple tips to make the process smoother and more enjoyable.

While moving home is a moment of excitement, it can also be one of life’s most stressful experiences. From packing and organising to adjusting to a new environment, even the most prepared movers can feel overwhelmed.

Sabina Cox, Marketing Manager at Platform Home Ownership, said: “Buying a new home is a major life event, and while it’s incredibly exciting, we know that the process of moving can often feel intense.

“At Platform, we want our buyers to focus the positives of this milestone rather than the pressures that come with it.

“These simple tips are designed to help new homeowners plan ahead, settle in, and enjoy their new surroundings as quickly as possible.”

Clear out the clutter

A move is the perfect opportunity to streamline your belongings. Decluttering before you pack helps reduce the number of boxes to move, making the process far easier. Sorting through old clothes, unused gadgets, or duplicate household items can also be surprisingly therapeutic, creating space for a fresh start in your new home.

Plan ahead

One of the biggest causes of moving stress is leaving too much to the last minute. Start by writing a checklist of key tasks such as booking a removal company, setting up utilities, and packing non-essential items early. Organising your move weeks in advance gives you a sense of control and avoids unnecessary last-minute panic.

Pack smart

Instead of mixing random items together, try packing room by room and clearly label each box. This approach makes unpacking much easier, as you can set up each area of your new home step by step. Keeping an “essentials box” of toiletries, chargers, and important documents also means you’ll have the necessities to hand on moving day.

Ask for help

Moving home is a big job, and it’s important not to take it all on yourself. Friends, family, or professional movers can make a huge difference. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help with heavy lifting, cleaning, or even just emotional support during a hectic few days. A shared effort lightens both the workload and the stress.

Look after yourself

In the rush to get everything done, it’s easy to neglect sleep, meals, or relaxation. Maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and taking short breaks during the move will help you recharge physically and mentally. A little self-care goes a long way to making the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Platform Home Ownership is delivering a variety of Shared Ownership homes across Lincolnshire, giving aspiring homeowners the opportunity to get on the property ladder with a smaller deposit and the flexibility to increase their share over time through staircasing.

Shared Ownership continues to grow in popularity as a more accessible route to home ownership, with Platform seeing a 179 per cent increase in sales at this stage of the 2024/25 financial year compared to the previous year.
