Grantham Canal Society, a volunteer-led charity dedicated to restoring the 33-mile stretch of the Grantham Canal between Nottingham and Grantham.
You may already be familiar with our work, but if not, we’re excited to share some news about our latest project!.
The refurbishment of The Weigh House is unfortunately delayed due to requirements to meet new guide lines in Charity Construction Projects.
The Canal & River Trust are currently updating their safety protocols and our supervisors and managers are currently awaiting training courses required to carry out the refurbishment elements of this scheme.
Photo shows the exposed original wharf stones. Found under 60cm of earth and thick bushes.
They are currently preparing to crowdfund for the restoration of “The Duke of Rutland’s Canal Wharf and Weigh House” at Muston Gorse, near Bottesford, and we’re reaching out for help to spread the word. This project will not only preserve an important piece of our canal’s history but also create a new heritage site for the community and visitors.
The Project at a Glance:
– Restoring the weigh house with a new roof, brickwork repairs, a new door, and more.
– Adding sculptures to represent the old canal crane.
– Transforming the site into a heritage visitor centre, complete with information boards, historical photos, and, if funding allows, original railway tracks and a restored rail cart.
The project will be of great interest to heritage enthusiasts, as well as walkers and cycllists.
