Former Spurs and England footballer Jimmy Greaves has died. He was 81.
I met this legend at a reunion of the 1966 World Cup winning squad of 1966 at Leicester in 1982. And what an amicable chap he was.
We had a long chat about his visit to Grantham with Hillingdon Borough in the Southern League days, when he scored all four in the 4-1 win at London Road.
After the match, in the dressing room, he took the tapes from his shinpads, sticking four in one pane of the window and one in the other.
He was chuffed when I told him they were still there as no one would take them down as it was Greavesie’s momento.
As far as I know they were still there when the 200-year-old dressing rooms were demolished to make way for Safeway Supermarket.
