Nick Jarvis (1955 – )
SON of Don Jarvis, the former lightweight professional boxer, Nick was born at Mansfield.
A keen footballer, he started out on the books of Derby County and after trials with Notts County and Chesterfield joined Ilkeston Town.
He made his Grantham debut in the first game of the 1978/79 season at Boston United in the County Cup and scored his maiden goal for the club only weeks later at Corby Town in the first round of the Southern League Cup.
Nicky was the only member of that season’s Championship winning side who played in every single game, while Grantham’s entrance into the Northern Premier League continued with his near constant appearance.
He was transferred to Scunthorpe United in the summer of 1980 after a £2,000 fee was paid, and following 26 appearances that season moved to Shepshed Charterhouse, before returning to Grantham in September 1981.
He briefly left London Road in 1982 to join Long Eaton United, but was back in time to play in the County Cup Final victory over Scunthorpe United and the final FA Cup qualifying round tie at Telford United.
Nick continued to play in the majority of the games for Grantham, up to the autumn of 1984 when he joined Matlock Town. However, he was back once more at London Road just over a year later, but made only four more appearances for Grantham, the last of which came in the March 1986 league game against Coventry Sporting.
Nick had something of a reputation as a ladies man, and a practical joker.
Nicky now runs his own civil engineering company and lives in the Nottingham area.
