Invasive plant in Grantham park

On rain free Thursday (3rd August) Grantham Rivercare found time to have a look at an outcrop of Himalayan Balsam in Queen Elizabeth Park, Grantham on their adopted stretch of Witham corridor.

The Balsam found to be in a variety of stages of growth, including in flower so they used their trugs to separate the flower head first before snapping the rest of the plant and then mashing down into three concentrated piles away from the rivers edge.

They have been treating this site by hand for around eight years with a marked reduction in spread, though this year the plants were more dense.

As yet, it is unknown what effect this summer’s weather has played a part in extra growth.
