Inquest to resume into death of Grantham teenager

November 11, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

An inquest will resume next week (Monday, November 18th) into the death of 15-year-old Evelyn Gibson who sadly died in Grantham on the 15th of April 2022.

Evelyn had a history of mental health difficulties, resulting in self-harming behaviours. At the time of her death she had been involved with CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and was known to the local Crisis Mental Health Team.

In July 2021 she had been admitted to the Beacon Hospital (run by the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust), initially as a voluntary patient, before being detained under section 2, and then section 3 of the Mental Health Act, and at times placed on 2:1 staffing support owing to the risk of self-harm. She was formally discharged on March 1st, 2022.

Lincolnshire Partnership Foundation Trust, Leicester Partnership Foundation Trust, United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust, Lincolnshire County Council, NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board and Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School are all Interested Persons at the hearing.

The coroner will consider as part of the hearing whether Article 2 is engaged.

Charlotte Andrews, a public law solicitor from Simpson Millar who is supporting Evelyn’s mum and stepfather at the inquest, commented: “The last couple of years have been extremely difficult for Evelyn’s family as they continue to come to terms with their loss.

They have many questions with regards the chain of events leading up to Evelyn’s death, and hope that this inquest will help them to better understand the care that she received both during her time at the Beacon and whilst in the community.”

Following Evelyn’s death her family set up #Evelynsbutterflyeffect in her memory, which encourages everyone to spread kindness through their actions towards others.
