Grantham MP Nick Boles says both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn are “not morally fit to be Prime Minister” as he argued that moderate voters had few choices bar the Liberal Democrats.
The Tory defector attacked Mr Johnson, whom he worked for briefly during his time as Mayor of London, but was equally disparaging about his Labour contender in the election on 12 December.
Mr Boles is not running for re-election having left the Conservative Party in April. He was one a group of Conservative MPs that favoured a softer Brexit, many of whom were ejected from the party by Mr Johnson.

He told Channel 4 News: “Well, I left the Conservative Party in April and became an independent and that was because the Conservative Party simply wouldn’t embrace what I thought was a reasonable compromise on Brexit, a soft Brexit deal.
“And I just couldn’t put up with it any more. When I left Theresa May was leader. And you know, she wasn’t the greatest leader in the world, but I did least feel that she was morally fit to be Prime Minister.
“The problem now is that I’m afraid that there is an inescapable conclusion, which is that neither Boris Johnson nor Jeremy Corbyn is morally fit to be Prime Minister, for very different reasons.
“Boris Johnson because he’s an entirely amoral figure. He’s betrayed everybody in his life. He lies about everything, he is wedded to no principle, no belief, he will say anything to get ahead, to get power.
“Jeremy Corbyn because of course he’s basically consorted with terrorists and murderous thugs throughout his life. All in favour of sort of abstract ideas, you know, like all totalitarian leaders, he’s much more interested in movements than in people and neither of them is fit to be Prime Minister.”
“Jo Swinson in a sense wins, not because I think she’s she’s perfect, but because she is at least not morally disqualified,”
Mr Boles went even further in a piece in the Evening Standard accusing the Prime Minister of being “a compulsive liar who has betrayed every single person he has ever had any dealings with: every woman who has ever loved him, every member of his family, every friend, every colleague, every employee, every constituent.
“His bumbling braggadocio disguises an all-consuming ego utterly without conscience, empathy or restraint.”
Writing about Mr Corbyn he said: “Like all leaders of a totalitarian mindset, he is entirely uninterested in the lives of individual human beings.
“He cares only for classes and factions, and the struggle between abstract political forces.”
He added that he was reluctantly backing the Liberal Democrats despite feeling uneasy about their policy of revoking Brexit.
