Thousands of Grantham people watched as the iconic Lancaster Bomber encircled the town twice at about 1.30pm today as a salute to its part in the aircraft’s history.
It was on its way to Manchester to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid
For the last three years of World War Two, the aircraft was the major heavy bomber used by the RAF, and eventually became known as the ‘best nighttime bomber of the war’.
The raid on German’s Rhur Valley dams, by Lancasters based at RAF Scampton, was organised at St Vincent’s in Grantham, while the control room was at Bridgewater House, Belton.
It will be seen above the skies at a number of northern locations including Manchester, Long Eaton and Hardwick Hall.
