Col James Hutchinson (1844-1924)
JAMES Hutchinson was born and died at Manthorpe Lodge, Manthorpe Road.
The eldest son of Simon Hutchinson, he was educated at the King’s School and on leaving joined his father in Earl Brownlow’s estate office.
He was appointed agent on his father’s death in 1867 – by coincidence the same day the Earl died.
James retired from the post in 1921 after 54 years.
He was a keen sportsman and rode with the Belvoir Hunt. He was a judge of horses and officiated at many shows, including the Lincolnshire Show.
He joined the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment as a ensign in 1866 and in 1904 was made Honorary Colonel, like his brother Arthur.
During the Boer War, he saw active service in South Africa and supplied his troops with quality boots at his expense.
He was a churchwarden at St Wulfram’s Church and was a tireless fundraiser.
Like his father, he became chairman of Little Gonerby Local Board and a trustee of local almshouses.
As secretary of Grantham Cricket Club, he provided them with a pavilion and constantly dipped his hand in his pocket for the club.
He became a director of Mowbray’s brewery in 1888 and died in office.
