William Joseph ‘Shave’ Huggins
William Huggins came to Grantham in 1938 as headmaster of the Kings School, a place he ran with strict discipline for nearly 20 years.
There were 173 applicants for the job.
He was married with two children. His wife had a diploma in nursing.
Mr Huggins was educated ar Wilson’s School, London from 1909 – 1916 then at Brasenose College Oxford, from 1918 – 1922 where he gained a second class MA in English.
He became a teacher at King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth in 1922 for three year, a further three at Cambridge High Schell, and a further three years at St Albans.
From 1922 until joining Kings, he was headmaster at Woking Secondary School.
A keen sportsman, he played both cricket and tennis at minor county standard and had trials for football while at university.
His starting salary at Kings was £700pa
