This is the Ministry of Pensions Hospital in 1923. The timber buildings stood roughly at the New Beacon Road/Harrowby Lane junction is today. And for that reason, for meny years after their demolition to make way for the Harrowby estate, it was known as Pensions Corner. The estate, was also known as Cherry Orchard although the area had originally been callled Cherry Holt.
A hospital was established for Harrowby Army Camp in 1915 which eventually covered 15 acres of land. A Ministry of Pensions Hospital, established in 1921, continued in use on the site until 1930.
In 1927 a question in the House of Commons was: “Minister of Pensions whether he has received any complaints about the Ministry of Pensions’ Hospital, Harrowby Camp, Grantham; if he is aware that the patients allege that the rain comes through the roof on to the beds; that there is no hot water for washing or for the bath; that the food is insufficient; and if he will have inquiries made into the administration of this hospital?” This was denied.
