Our ‘beating burglary together’ campaign has the aim of enlisting public support in crime reduction, while showing what we do to prevent, detect and deter burglary.
We set out a commitment which included attending all burglaries of a home, as well as cross border collaboration, local communication and sharing our efforts behind the scenes.
We can now update that between 1 April and 30 June, we had an attendance rate of 99.5%.
Detective Chief Inspector Jo Fortune said, “It’s our policy to attend all burglaries that happen in a home. We know this is what people want, but not necessarily what they expect to happen. A Nextdoor poll in June 2023 found 76% (of 826 respondents) did not know about this attendance policy. So it’s really important that we share this to offer reassurance that we are committed to fully investigating and reducing burglary.”
The attendance rate follows our previously released year-on-year comparison for burglary, which showed a 19% reduction in burglary (from 1642 incidents in 22/23 reducing to 1332 incidents recorded in 23/24). Reductions were recorded across the force in every district with the most significant reduction (34%) in East Lindsey.
Detective Chief Inspector Jo Fortune said, “These are some really good results and I would like to thank everyone across the force who has worked to make them happen. However, whilst burglaries are still being committed, there is always more we can do. It’s the start of the school holidays so the next focus in the campaign will be summer security, where we will highlight advice on keeping your home safe.”
Summer season crime reduction recommendations
- Lock your doors and windows at night and during the day when you’re not in the vicinity
- Keep valuables out of view.
- If you are away, consider timer switches on lights to make your home look occupied. Think about signs you are away e.g. cancel milk or paper deliveries, make sure your grass is cut, and don’t leave your bin out.
- Keep gates, boundaries and sheds secure.
- Lock away bikes, tools and garden items that could be taken or used to break into your home.
- Think before posting holiday pictures on social media as it can make burglars aware the house is empty.
- Look at your locks and see if they are old, and whether they fit flush with the exterior of the door. If they seem older, and don’t look like a flush fit to the outside of the door, consider changing them to a Secured By Design 3* TS007 Euro cylinder lock. You can find a local locksmith on the Master Locksmiths Association website.
- We recommend Immobilise where you can log your valuables and record serial numbers – this helps in our investigations and means you are more likely to get your property back if it’s stolen.
- By becoming part of your local Neighbourhood Watch, you’ll be joining other like-minded neighbours who, by keeping their eyes and ears open, help to keep potential criminals out of the area.
