A much-loved figure in Grantham’s pantomime scene is taking a well-earned break after more than a decade in the spotlight.
John Highton, who has played the Pantomime Dame at the Guildhall Arts Centre for the past 11 years, will not be appearing in this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty.
The Guildhall confirmed the news on social media, saying John had decided to take a well-earned break from the role he has made his own since 2014.
Pantomime dame is one of the most demanding roles in the festive theatre calendar, requiring a performer to combine physical comedy, audience interaction, sharp timing, and the ability to carry a costume that could double as a small marquee – all while keeping a packed house of children and adults equally entertained.
John Highton managed all of that and more, year after year, earning a devoted following among Grantham panto fans in the process.
The Guildhall said he would be “very much missed” by everyone involved in the production.
Sleeping Beauty runs at the Guildhall Arts Centre this Christmas. Ticket details are available at the box office.
