Have your say on how new development will look

October 2, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

South Kesteven District Council is offering residents the chance to highlight what is important to them when it comes to the design of new developments, in a consultation which opens today – 3rd October 2024.

A Design Code is being prepared which, once approved, will set out SKDC’s design expectations for planning applications and sit alongside the Local Plan.

SKDC is one of five local authorities to have been awarded £80,000 by the Office for Place and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) as part of a Design Code Pathfinder project, and is keen to evaluate and update its existing design standards.

The first stage of the consultation is to understand residents’ opinions of where they live and find out what they think new development should look and feel like.

SKDC’s Cabinet Member for Planning Cllr Phil Dilks said: “We want to hear what people value and cherish about their local environment and what they think requires improvement.

“Using an interactive map of the District called Create Communities, which has been specifically designed for this purpose by our chosen consultants Create Streets, those participating in the consultation will be able to click anywhere on it and make comments about buildings, streets and spaces. There will also be a series of fixed points to comment on.

“The feedback will be used to identify what is important to people about existing built-up areas and the elements they would like the character of new developments to include.

“Knowing the positive difference that has already been made thanks to our pioneering Design Guide which was adopted some time ago, I am confident that moving forwards with a stronger Design Code will build on that progress and give potential developers an even clearer steer on the high quality of design we expect in new developments across South Kesteven.

“This is an opportunity to shape the content of the Design Code at a very early stage and we would urge people to have their say.”

The consultation closes on 31st October 2024.

Further engagement events are planned for later this year and in early 2025.
