Harlaxton Manor is opening for a family-friendly weekend this month
Usually closed to the public, Harlaxton Manor will be opening its gates for two days this month to welcome visitors for a weekend of Bank Holiday fun.
Visitors will be able to explore the Grade I listed building on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25 only. Known for its regal appearance and stunning interior, Harlaxton Manor features a combination of Baroque, Elizabethan and Jacobean architectural features.
It was built by Gregory Gregory in 1831 but the building also has French-style terraces, an Italian garden, a Dutch ornamental canal and there is even an observatory. The Manor has stunning views across the Vale of Belvoir and has a rich history, previously being a stately home, a warfare and artillery school and a retreat for the Society of Jesus.
The building is now used as the British campus for the American University of Evansville, who took over from University of Stanford in 1971, and is known as Harlaxton College. This upcoming open weekend is a rare opportunity for people to access the site.
The Manor has often been featured in movies, including The Ruling Class starring Peter O’Toole, The last Days of General Patton with George C Scott and The Haunting with Catherine Zeta Jones whose autograph is still on one of the walls and Little Lord Fauntleroy.
Over these two days there will also be live classical music and traditional games. While there is free parking at the site, tickets to the open house cost £15 per adult, £8.50 per child or £12 for concessions.
Dr Holly Carter, Director and Dean of Harlaxton College said: “We’d be thrilled if you’d join us at Harlaxton Manor this upcoming August Bank Holiday weekend for a day out with a difference.
“If you’d like to treat your family, friends – or indeed yourself – to a day out in an unforgettable setting, we welcome you to explore the incredible and historic Harlaxton Manor. Whether you enjoy immersing yourself in history or taking in the great outdoors, you can enjoy both at our Summer Open House and Gardens.”
She added: “Pack a picnic and enjoy incredible views against a historic backdrop with your nearest and dearest. We’ll have uplifting live music from a trained pianist and light refreshments available in the manor’s main foyer, so we’d be utterly delighted if you’d join us on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August.”
