Hall open to public for 4th time in 87 years

September 6, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

FOR only for the fourth time in its 87-year history, the Grantham Freemasons’ Hall on Chambers Street is swinging open its doors for a special public viewing.

This much-anticipated event is part of the Lincolnshire Heritage weekend and will take place on Saturday, September 14th, and Sunday, September 15th 2024, from 11 am to 3 pm.

The hall has been a cornerstone of Grantham life since its establishment on Chambers Street in 1937. The Freemasons themselves have a much longer history in the town, tracing their roots back to 1726. Over the centuries, they’ve shifted locations including the George Hotel to the Ship Tavern, Bath Street, London Road and eventually to their current home.

Visitors are invited to explore the rich history and architectural wonders of this storied building. The tour will include all the hidden corners, intricate details, and, of course, the grand and ornate Lodge room where Grantham Freemasons convene monthly.

Those interested in historical artefacts will be in for a treat as the Hall’s Museum of Freemasonry will also be open to the public.

Faraday House on Chambers Street was built in 1883. It was originally Faraday House School, with headmaster Edward Brown. It was a boarding school for 50-60 boys. In about 1900 it became the Grantham Training Lodge for Young Servants and later a training lodge for young girls. It then became an orphanage for a while and then a hall used for Guides and other groups. In 1935-6, it was bought by the Grantham Freemasons and used as their Masonic Hall.

The museum boasts a wide array of items, including Masonic paintings, medals, and regalia that date back to the late 1700s and early 1800s. Chris Watkin, a key figure in the event’s organising committee, says, “This open day is not only a chance for the public to take a glimpse into a significant part of Grantham’s heritage but also an opportunity for anyone considering becoming a Freemason to ask questions and get straightforward answers.” The Freemasons emphasise that there is no obligation to join and encourage all types of inquiries during the event.

Visitors will have the freedom to engage in open conversations about what Freemasonry entails, its history in Grantham, and what it offers to its members. Entry is entirely free throughout the event, making it an excellent outing for individuals, families, and community groups.

While booking is not required, the Freemasons kindly request that all children be accompanied by an adult. As the Grantham Freemasons’ Hall opens its doors for the fourth public viewing in its long history, it promises a unique experience that blends local heritage, architecture, and a sense of community.

Whether you are a history buff, curious local, or someone considering joining the Freemasons, this is an event you won’t want to miss.
