“I have made so many friends with all the people I volunteer with. We go to each other’s homes for dinner, take our dogs out together for walks in the park. We’ve become a little family and it’s just gorgeous.”
“I started fundraising for Guide Dogs at weekends to help and say thank you for the beautiful guide dogs I have had over the years. I have had guide dogs for 34 years now and been able to work and travel all over the UK. So, the least I can do now is to give back and say thank you to Guide Dogs for what they’ve done and try to raise some money and awareness. And since retiring I can come out to events more often.
I’m a people person, so I enjoy the company from volunteering. It’s also great to raise awareness and let people know just how wonderful these dogs are and how much they love what they do. It’s also lovely because the dogs enjoy the fuss as well.
When the harness is off, it just warms my heart when my guide dog Toby – a Labrador cross golden retriever – is there wagging his tail and smiling at everyone. He just loves it and that makes me feel good as well.
The friendships we’ve made from volunteering is fantastic. We go out, socialise together, have meals, and look after each other. It’s also nice to have that company when we take the dogs to the park. All the dogs have become friends and as soon as they see each other at a fundraising event it’s like seeing their brothers and sisters.
If anybody is interested in volunteering, please do come along, and join in because it’s good fun. We all have a lovely time, and we raise awareness and money. So, if you’re sitting at home, or looking for something to do come and be part of the family.”
