The Government has put Newark and the surrounding area on the coronavirus watchlist.
Following a Local Action Committee meeting, Newark and Sherwood will to be kept under close scrutiny after a sudden rise in coronavirus cases.
The district recorded 56 new cases of Covid-19 for the most recent 14-day period according to data from Nottinghamshire County Council.
The council says the majority of cases are people who live in Newark.
The announcement comes after 22 people tested positive for coronavirus at the Bakkavor desserts factory – where the whole workforce is being tested.
However, not all cases are linked to the Bakkavor site.
The watchlist shows the rate and trend in weekly incidents, and the proportion of people that are testing positive, for several local authorities.
The director of public health for Nottinghamshire Jonathan Gribbin said: “It is of critical importance that strict measures to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 are in place across the whole community, all of our workplaces, and in any setting where we meet with people outside of our immediate household.
“Residents, businesses and everyone living or working in Newark are strongly urged to follow all of the Government guidance in full.
“It is still vital that everyone follows social distancing guidance in full including guidelines about car sharing, washing hands regularly, wearing face coverings, self-isolating and quickly getting a test if symptoms develops.”
