Eleanor George, 28, a therapist and HR Manager from Grantham, will participate in the Great North Run on Sunday 10 September. She will be taking on the 13.1 mile challenge to raise money for Independent Age, the national charity that supports older people living in financial hardship.
Eleanor is running for Independent Age because of a friend she made through the charity and hopes to help the charity reach more older people.
She said: “I made a great friend through Independent Age, who, by circumstance only, meant she felt alone in life approaching her later years. We have a close connection and I speak to her every week.
“Independent Age provides an opportunity for those who feel isolated to find connection again and find greater wellbeing. I know they offer a range of advice, including financial, which in this confusion highly technical world where high street banks are closing, is absolutely necessary.
“It’s a scary world to navigate for those who didn’t grow up around technology and the internet and they help take some of the burden from older people.”
Eleanor is hoping to raise at least £300 for the charity and has currently raised over £100. Training has not been all smooth sailing for Eleanor:
“I’ve suffered with a hamstring injury which has hampered my efforts but I’m now back on track. I’m hoping to go sub 1:30 so I’ve definitely been putting in the hours!”

Eleanor is one of 7 people running in the Great North Run for Independent Age.
Independent Age is a national charity focused on supporting older people in financial hardship. The charity provides a strong campaigning voice, and free and impartial advice on financial issues that affect to people over 65 and their families.
Stuart Rogers, Acting Chief Executive of Independent Age, said: “Thank you to Eleanor for choosing to fundraise for Independent Age at this year’s Great North Run. Eleanor’s efforts will help us to reach our goal of improving the lives of one million older people in financial hardship by 2027. We hope to do this by tackling four major issues facing older people which are: income, costs, community and housing.
“With 2.1 million older people already living in poverty and millions more facing financial hardship due to the increased cost of living, it’s more important than ever that we support and advocate for those in later life. We couldn’t do this without volunteers and fundraisers like Eleanor. Thank you.”
